Royal Bay Mammoths Bravehearts Short Videos
14 Bravehearts left the Switch Bridge Saturday morning at 10am/
The first stop was The Nest #1 near the 9km Marker along the Galloping Goose Trail
Secondly, the group of 14 arrived at The Nest Near the Lake which was the terminus for 10 riders.
Grant, Bruce, Ted and Bill continued on to Royal Bay on yet another circuitous route lead by Grant.
Some new and interesting developments were observed along the way.
For theseFabulous Four their teminus at Royal Bay marked 29km from home
The inbound route was more direct butstil included a ride through Roayl Roads Park trails
Total distance this day for the longer-distance-riders was 50+km.
Thanks to everyone for such a good turnout with good cycling and camaraderie.

Bravehearts Cycle Colwood, Esquimalt Lagoon + Royal Roads University

Colwood Gateway Overpass Royal Roads Trail video

Saturday, April 25, 2026 was an awesome 53.5km ride for at leasst one Bravehearts Cycling Group (BCG) member.

Led by Grant the group left the Switch Bridge (SB) at 10am headed for Esquimalt Lagoon and Royal Roads.
Upon reaching the 13km Marker along the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT) this was the first time most BCG members got to cycled across the newly-opened Colwood Gateway Overpass (CGO). Yes, we have video-to-prove-it.
From the CGO, the route was along Ocean Boulevard to Lagoon Rd and into Royal Roads campus. (see video)
Bravehearts members, having dispersed upon leaving the Lagoon, left the Three Amigos: Bill, Bruce and Grant to complete their ride home using this route.
The total time and distance for Bill — and presumably others — was three hours and some 53.5km long.

Colwood Gateway Overpass Open 4/9/26

13km Marks Gateway Overpass Three Bravehearts met at the Switch Bridge at 10am to cycle to Royal Roads and all nearby points.
Grant was leader, Bill had binderdundat and for Bruce much of it was new.
Bill's main interest was the opening ceremony for the new Colwood Gateway Overpass along the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT). The ceremony was scheduled for 3pm which did not fit the Bravehearts plan so Bill conducted his own ceremony while G+B went into standby mode.
Ever since 2007 there was a 13km Marker beside the short, 180m section of trail between Wale Rd. and Old Island Highway. Some locals — for some unknown reason — kept removing it by physically pulling the wooden post out of the ground and discarding it. At some point, CRD stopped replacing it. It's been gone for years.
Vested interests and locals allegedly did not want this part of the trail rejuvenated so it would become commercial real-estate and dam the cyclists they could continue along the 'temporary' detour to join the east and west section.
This is why Bill made his own 13km Marker signs and attached one at each end of the new GGT overpass side-rail-posts.

Just a friendly reminder to CRD there was in the past om the GGT, a 13km Marker here and on the new bridge said indicator should be permanently replaced by them.

Bravehearts are mostly men retirees (some still work) who ride ebikes — some ride acoustic bikes. Any and all (women too) are welcome to join the group any Saturday morning at the Switch Bridge at 10am

Colwood Gateway Overpass

Colwood Gateway Bridge quadtych About the Galloping Goose Regional Trail in Colwood.
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail (GGT) is a picturesque multi-use trail that runs through the heart of Colwood as it follows the old railway line on its 55km journey from Victoria to Sooke.
The trail, which is owned and maintained by the Capital Regional District, attracts thousands of users every day. From March 1, 2024 to March 1, 2025 a total of 270,077 pedestrians and cyclists have passed the automated counter on the Galloping Goose Regional Trail near Wale Road.
The new Colwood Gateway Bridge will allow for a safe, seamless connection that encourages more residents and visitors to travel in and around Colwood on foot or by bike, supporting the City's goals for improved health and well being, easing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and reducing our climate impact.

Drove Honda with iZip to Royal Bay

Royal Bay Alltrails GPS Phone App Monday morning I drove the Honda with bike-on-board to Royal Bay.
I was here last Thursday but today with my bike in tow.
It was too windy to put the drone up but it was in my carrier.
Using the Vital Action Video Camera ($99CND) was a good idea.
It's as good as my 12yr-old GoPro except for battery life.
It was nice to back in the area and the whole place can be covered in 15-minutes on a bike.

Drove Benz Royal Bay

Painter Road Parking Thursday morning, when the homecare person came in, I drove the Benz to Royal Roads then on to Royal Bay.
The weather was a damp, Scottish-mist and the 22km distance on the bike gets boring after a few trips.
After checking out the Westshore Rowing and Paddling Centre and Blue Heron House it was up Serpentine Rd. and on to Royal Bay.
Painter Road Trailhead is still there so that's where the limo was parked while checking out the surroundings.

37km Roundtrip Home to Royal Roads and back

Life Imitating Art Thursday morning I cycled a 37km roundtrip to Royal Roads University grounds and back home.
The destination was Royal Bay but I turned around at Painter Road gate.
iZip's battery was showing half empty after only 19km. What!
Perhaps I've been taking too many short rides and it forgot it's got 55km in it.
For something completely different:
Life imitating art again:
The headline in this morning's Times Colonist newpaper featured a photograph which is the same as one I took.
This is great news for this troublesome intersection disrupting the flow along the Galloping Goose Trail
“Corey Burger of Capital Bike, which advocates for cycling in the capital region, said the Colwood bridge will close a critical gap in the Galloping Goose Trail and vastly improve safety for cyclists.”

Cycled 46km roundtrip Royal Bay Park DJI Mini2

Made In The Shade at Royal Beach Park Wednesday morning I cycled 46km roundtrip from home to Royal Beach Park to perform a public service by putting my DJI Mini 2 drone up over the site of the proposed new pathway in Colwood, BC.
I've pretty much decided there is no usable cyling route through Royal Roads Uniersity grounds from the 14km Maker along the Galloping Gosoe Trail and Gate #G8 at Painter Road.
The plan is to find aroute within Hatley Castle grounds and it may lye by incorpoarting College Rod/Library Ln/Cottonwood Ln. But this will be checked out asap.

Walked Latoria Creek Park in Colwood

"This is where I went and this is what I saw."

Saturday we walked Latoria Creek Park in Colwood, BC.
It's only one-kilometre in length but a pretty god hike just the same.
It includes a few monster staircases which are somewhat unique in the area
It was too much for the wife so she returned to the Benz parked on Pelican Plc. road.
I was 20-minutes out and the same coming back (oddly enough).
