Thursday, March 5 2026 I cycled 18km roundtrip to Karnel Singh Jawl's funeral at McCall's Funeral Gardens on Falaise Drv.

It seems all we go out for these days is to see the doctor or go to a funeral. No doctor appointments since last Tuesday (12th) but two funerals (no weddings), this week. One Friday and the other Sunday.

Friday was Hugh Sutherlands' (91yrs) and Sunday was for Flo Dumont (87). Both lived full and active lives.

Hugh's memorial went well with about 150 souls in attendance at McCall's on Falaise Dr. Ian Sutherland is Hugh's only surviving sibling and both Ian and Hugh (and brother, Art) were members of the Saltire Society of Victoria and were also members of the Union Club of British Columbia where we held our monthly Scottish gatherings.

The only other persons I knew there were two (former) members of Saltire: Past Provost, Charles McLean and Dr. Walter Balfour (professor emeritus UVic, retired). I had not seen either since 2006 and immediately upon seeing me, Walter, remembered my name and also noted he remembered the talk I gave at Saltire regarding one: Dr. John Rae, an Orcadian, and the most successful Arctic explorer of the 17th century (1840-49).

Flo Dumont's event was held at the Pro Patria legion where she and husband, Jim, served for many years. Jim as president and Flo the head of many committees -- the most notable being the Annual Poppy Program for over 35 years.
