Harris Creek Suspension Bridge
Thursday, October 23, 2014, we drove 265 km (165 miles) around the Pacific Marine Circle Route on Vancouver Island. We drove clockwise from Victoria to Port Renfrew returning via Duncan, BC.
The Hotel was originally a bunkhouse for loggers and in 1927 the main portion of the Hotel was barged–in from Neah Bay Washington to Port Renfrew. The cafe burned down in 2005.
The last time I was in the original Port Renfrew Hotel was in 1975 after completing a seven-day hiking trip over the entire 75 km (47 miles) length of the world-famous: West Coast Trail. Wow, that's almost 40 years ago!
The Port Renfrew Hotel Pier in Port Renfrew harbour and belongs to the hotel. On the lefthand side (southside) of the pier in this photo is where the Port Renfrew Hotel Cabins are located.

This short video was recorded at one of the many hightlights along this wonderful road trip on Southern Vancouver Island. It doesn't show in this video but it's actually raining cats and dogs while recording. Yes, a real west coast downpour.

China Beach & Shirley delicious
Thursday we drove 72km (45miles) to China Beach Day Use Park on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The official name of the park is Juan de Fuca Provincial Park. There are two large parking areas in the day-use section. This is also the trailhead for the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. There is also a campground entrance but it is closed during winter months.
There is a 670m (730yd) long trail leading down to the beach from the parking lot. The gain is approximately 100m (330ft.). The trail is in extremely good condition, even boasting a 30m long, concrete staircase.
China Beach is one of the best on this coast.
On the way home, we stopped in at Shirley Delicious bistro again for lunch of one of their soon-to-be-world-famous soups with focaccia bread. Yummy.

Sheringham Lighthouse / French Beach then supper at JaySue's
Thursday we drove 60km (37miles) to Shirley, BC. Now, no one has ever heard of Shirley, BC, so be advised it's a 1¼ hr. drive from Victoria out the Westcoast Rd. past Sooke, BC. Inasmuch as this was our first time to Sheringham Point Lighthouse we followed the directions posts online at the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society's Lighthouse View Trail webpage.
Directions from Victoria/Sooke Take Sooke Road (BC 14 – West Coast Road) west for approximately 15.6 kilometres beyond Sooke. You’ll enter the Shirley District at Anderson Road. Continue on West Coast Road watching for the yellow traffic sign that warns of the Fire Hall. When you see the Community Hall and Fire Hall on the left side of the road – watch for Sheringham Point Road, immediately past. Turn left. Continue 1 kilometre to the parking area on the right. Watch for the trail head sign.
For those interested there's a short Youtube video here: Sheringham Lighthouse Trail Walk
The parking lot shown at the opening in this video is the recommended one at the end of Sheringham Pt. Road. (off Westcoast Rd.) The road identified in the video as Woodhouse is actually Lighthouse Point Rd. Lighthouse Point Rd. is accessed from Westcoast Rd via Woodhaven then left onto Seaside Drv. Lighthouse Point Rd. is accessed through stone gates.
The GPS Coordinates of Sheringham Lighthouse are: 48°22'36.30"N 123°55'15.64"W

After stopping in at Shirley Delicious bistro (what else could it be called), we're of the opinion no trip to the West Coast of Vancouver Island would be complete without doing so. Located beside Westcoast Road at Sheringham Pt. Rd., it could be missed if one is not paying attention. Heading westbound, it's just past the Shirley Fire Hall. It's unique in a few ways: its proprietor; its menu and its ambiance. Try it.
P.S. There's an indoor seating area and access to outdoor patio at the rear.
Afterward, we walked 2km at French Beach.
Thursday night we dined at JaySue's with Sam & Irene. A pretty good day, I'd say.

Jordan River Powerhouse
Friday we drove 70km (43miles) to Jordan River, BC, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. We'd seen a few photos on Flickr taken at the abandoned, Vancouver Island Power Company's Powerhouse.
The Vancouver Island Power Company completed construction of the Jordan River hydroelectric system in 1911. While the shell of the old powerhouse still stands on its concrete foundation today, gone are the glory days when it produced the power that ran the City of Victoria. Old records show that the first power reached Victoria on September 10, 1911. While the building has changed dramatically from the days when the roar of its turbines drowned out conversation, though it is surrounded by encroaching alders, there is an aura still, a haunting reminder of the days when it helped light up southern Vancouver Island.
The trailhead is accessed from the large clearing (which is now gated and thus no parking) to one's righthand side upon reaching sea level at Jordan River. There are two large, steel pylons marking the trail's entrance. It's only 300m to the powerhouse. The area is designated private property.
