Walked CHGC Jammed & Dined
Tuesday we walked 4.2km around Cedar Hill Golf Course and met Ches & Jo beforehand. They were going golfing and we were going walking.
Theirs was a good-walk-spoiled.
After lunch we went to Don & Marg's and while we jammed the ladies drank wine on the patio.
We were invited to Fireside to celebrate M's b'day; a good time (and dinner) was had by all.

26th Annual TC10k Half-Marathon Race
Sunday I cycled up to the University of Victoria (UVic) to see the start of the 26th Annual TC10k Half-Marathon Race (Times Colonist 10k Race).
The race started at 9:00 a.m. from UVic's Centennial Stadium and headed southeast around that short section of Ring Road to join Henderson Road southbound.
After cycling for an hour, I took up my post at the intersection of Ring and Henderson roads.
Here's a 1-minute VIDEO capturing all the excitement of this momentus event.

Zoom H2n Recorder with Ywine
Saturday I played a couple of tunes with Yesterday's Wine Country Band at Esquimalt Legion. Man, was I ever nervous!
Having not played on a band-set in over forty years, it will take a bit of getting used to. That's an understatement. I recorded my performance on my Zoom H2n portable audio recorder so hopefully can learn from this experience
Talking about Zoom H2n portable recorders, I'm now the proud owner of two of these devices. My friend bought one (after seeing mine) a couple of year's ago but did not use it so i took it off his hands.

Shar's Birthday et al

Thursday we enjoyed the Esquimalt Legion's Seniors' Group Halloween Event held upstairs at the legion between 3-7p.m.. Ron King provided the musical entertainment and Kathryn fed us.
Friday, SharBen ("The Kids" aka. daughter and son'n law) joined us at LURE Restaurant to celebrate her birthday. A good time and meal was had by all.
Friday night, the wife and I enjoyed the Ukrainian supper at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre. Always a good meal and music provided by the Gypsy Rovers Band. The Gypsy Rovers are Dick Okros, mandolin, Brian Tetlow, bass, Ron Minchin, guitar. The quick high-kicking, toe-tapping, whirling music of Hungarian Czardas, Romanian and Jewish Horas, Greek Sirtakis, Italian Tarantellas, Russian and Ukrainian Hopaks and Kolomeikas are all part of their extensive European repertoire. Great fun.
Saturday we dressed up as cowboys/girls and headed to our legion for lunch. Yesterday's Wine Country Band played from 2-6 p.m. Yesterday's Wine is the currently the houseband at Esquimalt Legion in Victoria BC Canada. Afterward we dined with Sam & C. and Wayne & G. at Il Greco Restaurant. Just livin' the life.
This video features some replacement musicians frequentley referred to as: "jammers". Featured on fiddle is Oban Gilbert; on bass, Tom Horsefall and Rob Jeffries on guitar. Rob was filling in on guitar for Ywine's Donny Peterson who was indisposed. Tom Horsefall took Clayton O'howe's place on bass. We hope you enjoy this 90-second clip from the full length tune: Faded Love Tom Gough is leader -- and lead vocals -- of Ywine; Randy Cross, drums with Doc Jenkins on steel guitar.

Live at the Legion
It was nice to be back home again at the Legion listening and dancing to the sounds of Yesterday's Wine Country Band. Donny was back from vacation so we got to enjoy his marvelous guitar playing. Too bad Clayton was away so we hope all goes well with him -- nice man and marvelous bass player and sound-technician. We missed you, buddy! Doc Jenkins (steel guitar) is still vacationing but a local musician filled in on a few numbers using his own steel guitar. Glenda sang a few with Tom so that's always an added treat.
Tom Gough sings Bad Timing
JaySue joined us for the afternoon and 12 of us went to Il Greco afterward for supper. A good time was had by all.

Bentley sent a photo of him and Jim Cuddy taken at last night's Save-on Foods Centre Blue Rodeo concert here in Victoria. Ben worked with Jim before Blue Rodeo hit the big time and Jim and his staff have kept in touch over the intervening quarter century. Bentley worked in the television production business in Toronto and helped produce Jim's early productions.
Bentley wrote to us: "We spent an amazing evening with some dear, old friends last night. 25 years ago, on her birthday, Sharon and I had our first official date. Our friend David Strupp had invited us to the Rivoli in Toronto to hear "this band". He worked in film with one of the guys and they had just released their first album! That evening started a number of wonderful relationships that we celebrated last night: Sharon and I AND "Blue Rodeo" celebrating 25 years. Little did we know on that night two-and-a-half decades ago that we'd all have this long, wonderful relationship to walk together. I ended up being Jim Cuddy's assistant in the film biz and becoming a part of his young family at the time. It was great to have a chance to remember a lot of amazing memories last night with Sharon, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor and the rest of Blue Rodeo."

When we heard Don Peterson was filling for the Deb Rhymer Band's guitar player at the Travelodge on Sunday we dropped in. After enjoying a delicious lunch quesadilla we kicked back and watched the patrons slowly gather in the small club. And gather they did. The place was packed by the time the band started playing.
The Deb Rhymer Band have been featured numerous times at the Victoria Jazz Society's annual Blues Bash and R and B Fest and have been a part of the Victoria blues scene for many years. The band is fronted by the Divine Ms. Deb Rhymer on vocals and includes Phill Albert on bass, Neil Taylor on guitar and Andy Graffiti on drums. The band released their first CD in 2005 and is steadily getting more airplay including the legendary blues show hosted by CBC’s Holger Peterson. The band currently host the popular Sunday Afternoon Blues Jam from 3-7pm every Sunday at The Upper Deck Lounge in The Travelodge on Gorge Road.
This appears to be the place Victoria's most talented musicians hang when not playing. Dennis Ferbey was there with his original partner in Katzenjammers, one Rob Edwards. Rob used to play the most interesting and technically perfect melodies on his guitar when the original-four played the Bengal Room back in the 70s. Rob is currently a director with the Victoria Blues Society (VBS). Rhonda Aikin, vocalist with The Push Band was there as was Dave, the leader of Victoria's music group Southbound
The number and quality of the local musicians and bands who show up to jam -- read that play-for-free -- is incredible and a testament to the organizational skills of one Deb Rhymer. This lady is organized! Not only that, she actually makes time for the jammers to get on set. This is important. Each jammer -- individual or group's rep -- signs a list upon entering the club. It appears a it's first-come-first-up type of arrangement. Deb's band plays the first 45-minute set then it's off stage and on with the jammers. This certainly seems to keep them coming back week-after-week. Goodonya, Deb . . . great job.
If there's time for all the jammers to play, The Deb Rhymer Band closes with the last set. This didn't happen Sunday as there must have been at least twenty jammers who signed that list. This event must be creating a veritable gold mine for this business. Great place. Great entertainment, food and drink.
P.S. Ms. Rhymer even gave me permission to record with my Zoom H2n digital high-tech audio recorder. Thanks, Deb, the 44/16 takes came out very good.

Here's how our Saturday went (for those interested): We enjoyed yet another fun Saturday of music, dancing and dining -- pretty much in that order as well. The galley at the legion is still closed for the holiday so we got panini sandwiches for lunch from Tim Horton's. A very good panini, by the way. To our surprise, Yesterday's Wine (Ywine) was still setup from their New Years Eve gig (and NY day) and played this Saturday afternoon's, four-hour session. They were hired on for an additional two-hour gig (until 8p.m.) to play a birthday party celebration. We were out of there at 5:30 heading for Il Greco for supper as part of a 10-person group. What good food they have there. Another pleasant surprise was when Steve and Sherry joined us at our table beside the stage. Steve is bandleader of Roadstars Band and Sherry often jams with his five-piece group. Both Steve and Sherry were onstage performing a half-dozen tunes between them. Great music. Good fun. It goes without saying everyone enjoyed Ywine -- one of Canada's top musical groups today.

Today we walked 5km up the 'grind' and onward following our counterclockwise (ccw) route. What a surprisingly, mild morning! After the sun came out from behind the clouds it was downright warm. No complaints here but we were suited up for the worst.
No deer were sighted but there was signs on the trail from their rutting activities -- if you get my meanin'. lol
A week ago I reported here we would (should?) have our Ramblin' Man project completed but we have not; Ronnie wants to lay down some keyboard harmony against my guitar lead during the intro so I've redone it repeatedly but latest reports are it's now acceptable. Cool.
Talking about music, we had quite a full day last Saturday, October 27th. We enjoyed lunch at the legion then danced to the sounds of Ywine (Yesterday's Wine country Music Band) from 2-6:00 p.m. This is the best country music band in Canada today. I recorded the whole gig on my Zoom H2n portable recorder using MS (MidSide) setting. This setting uses the middle condenser mic with two dynamic side mics. The 35+ takes came out good. Glenda did lots of singing and Donny was -- as always -- fabulous on his guitars. IMO, Don has to be one of the finest guitar players on the planet -- and I've heard them all over the course of 50-years.
As if that wasn't excitement enough, we left the legion and went to the Elks Annual Halloween Event. Here we had a homecooked, ham dinner and danced to the sounds of Ron King. Ron is a poet-and-a-one-man-band filling in his track and guitar playing with his marvelous vocals. Yaa . . . the boy can sing! It was great to see all our the gang from the CPO's mess. Ah . . . those were the days!

The Mount Douglas Secondary School production: Seussical the Musical, was performed seven times at Spectrum Community School Theatre to sold-out audiences from April 26th through May 5, 2012. Seussical is a musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty based on the books of Dr. Seuss that debuted on Broadway in 2000. The play's story is a rather complex amalgamation of many of Seuss's most famous books. Our granddaughter performed as singer and dancer in all seven performances; she was the most beautiful young woman on the stage. Well done A. The stage production was accompanied by a 20-piece orchestra.
Of all the live plays I've attended over my lifetime-to-date, this was the most entertaining of them all. Congratulations to all Greater Victoria School Boards and participants for producing such quality entertainment. What a remarkable, public school system we have.
