Update on Our Walking Activities

I have not taken any cardio walks lately but have done the slowwalk(s) with my wife.
She is not as strong as before (but who is?) so we mainly walk her favourite place along Selkirk Waters near the trestle. This walk is never over a kilometre so they're not posted here.
Therefore, to find out what's really going on checkout Our FlickR Site.
Since early December we've been driving up to Malahat, BC to checkout the Malahat Skywalk construction.
Many pictures are posted at Our FlickR Site.
I haven't ridden my bike since November 22 2020 when Biking the Galloping Goose Trail to the E&N Rail Trail

Friday morning I walked a 3300m loop up and over Mt. Tolmie.  That be: up the Grind and down to the reservoir to Kendal and back over the mountain from Rattenbury to Glastonbury and home.

A nice walk at a balmy 7°C, no wind and no rain. Yes!

Biking Drone to Oliphant Lake

Sunday morning I cycled 9.5km roundtrip from Aikman Road parking and trainlhead to Oliphant Lake dock and viewing platform.

Somewhere along the way I managed to put my drone up ona beautiful day.
What aspectacular day to be outdoors!
The ride on my ebike pulling the drone onmy Burley Bike Trailer was enervating but I made it.
There's lots of hills both up and down but overall it equals out. the lake is at 1388ft. and the trailhead is 1422ft.
The drone acted up upon liftoff but settled down after a while.
I got good video footage from the drone and GoPro and posted my 428th video to Youtube.

Rat Lake Ride with Amos

Riding Rat Lake On a misty, Sunday morning my grandson (22yrs) and I took a bike ride up to Rat Lake from Mill Bay Road at Bemberton, BC (on Vancouver Island).
It was a blast! After an exhilerating bike ride, we put the drone up and got some misty video of the lake from 100ft.
Rat Lake Aerial VIDEO
The trail is maintained by the CVRD while the land is owned by a logging company. It is suggested that you stay on the trail as the area surrounding the hike is being actively logged. The trail is an easy 45 minute hike at a leisurely pace and the views of the lake are quite picturesque especially in the summer when the frogs are singing on the lilypads.
Afterward, we coffee and muffins at Frayne Road Serious Coffee. I showed Amos the Gatewheel Road, Rat Lake trailhead.
We were home at our place before noon (11:57a.m.)

Down Memory Lane for Drone Flight

In search of Rat Lake from the end of Memory Lane (yes, that's the name of the dead-end road). From Hwy-1 near Mill Bay turn left at Butterfield Rd to Blenko Rd to Memory Lane (yes, that's the name of the dead-end road). Down Memory Lane the VIDEO
We drove back to Mill Bay Serious Coffee for a pee and coffee and carrotcake muffin. the best.
I didn't see the lake from the hexacopter because just 500ft outbound the controller lost views from the drone. Oh well.

Drone Flight over Cooper's Cove

HMCS Cowichan 162 drone shot Wednesday I walked 2800m back-and-forth from Stickleback West Coast Eatery up and along past the 39km Marker on the Galloping Goose Trail
Firstly, with wife safely seated in the Benz, I walked the 700m up to a clearing along the trail suitable for launching the drone.
Once back at the vehicle, we drove to Sooke Village Mall where she would be more comfortable while I drove back and put the Yuneec Typhoon H up over Cooper's Cove.
The drone camera recorded the derelict HMCS Cowichan minesweeper moored at Goodbridge Peninsula dock which was the objective of this exercise.
We were home a little after 1:00p.m.
A very enjoyable day out in the wilds of Sooke, BC.

Walked Royal Bay and Flew Drone

Royal Bay Aerial Drone Image Friday we walked one mile (1700m) out and back along Victoria's Breakwater.

Saturday we walked at Royal Bay Gablecraft Home Development site and put the drone up to get video of the yet-to-be-developed part of the project. In 2018, we recorded aerial video of the developed part of the site.
Realizing the houses will be there for years-to-come, we now concentrate on the area that will soon be gone foreever.

We had our lunch sandwiches at Esquimalt Lagoon beach, along with thousands of other Victorians who have to stay away from the malls (and everywhere else).

Cycled 16km with Burley and Hexacopter to Leechtown

Saturday I cycled 16kkm roundtrip from the Upper Parking Lot #2 at Sooke Potholes to the end of the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT).

The parking lot is located at the 48½km mark along the GGT trail and the location of former, 1864 Leechtown is at the 56½km location.

The red gate, at the very end of the trail (blocks access to Victoria Watershed) is located at the 57km location. The trail is measured from the Johnson Street Bridge in downtown Victoria BC.

I carried my ebike on the car-rack and drove the 48km from Victoria to Sooke with my bike trailer and Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter (6 props) in the back seat. My wife chose the better part and stayed home as she does not cycle.

The Sooke River has experienced monumental flooding and Friday night or Satuday morning, February 1, 2020 it washed three young men away while driving in their pickup truck beside the river. The force of the water snapped trees on the river’s edge, moved concrete barriers and lifted sunken logs into an elevated parking lot.

For some time I've wanted to capture the force of these events from my drone. It's really a catch-22 situation: The river floods to max when it's raining and one can't fly drones in the rain. At least, not mine. The motors and their electrical wire windings are fully exposed to the elements so one is really taking their chances by attempting to fly in these conditions. Of course, if you have $1200 dollars and change you don't want -- go for it.

Our thoughts and prayers for the three young men are with the families of the deceased.

Cycled with Uriah and Hexacopter to Leechtown

Tuesday, Uriah and I cycled from Sooke Potholes up to Leechtown.

I pulled my Burley Trailer behind with my Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter onboard.

We put the bird up from the gravel bar beside the Deep Pool, getting some good 1920x1080p video.

The video link is: Leechtown Hexacopter Drone VIDEO

Uriah threw a pedal-arm on his ride and we had to walk northward from the 54km Marker along the Galloping Goose Trail.

Cycled 23km along GGT with Burley Trailer and Hexacopter

Smoky Tuesday morning I cycled 23km roundtrip along the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT) from Royal Roads park&ride (beside Aldeane Ave.), south to Rocky Point Road and back. The GGT crosses here where Kangaroo Road connects.

This Xing is located at the 25.4km distance along the GGT. It's been a while since this section was last cycled by me so I found it quite refreshing to see all the old familiar views.

Even on a weekday morning, the GGT is getting lots of traffic. Never once while traversing this 11.5km section was I out of sight of others using the trail. Why, even some marksmen (markspersonages?) were shooting at the South Vancouver Island Rangers (SVIR) grounds beside Luxton Road in Metchosin at the 20km Marker.

I was hauling my Yuneec Haxacopter H on my Burley Flatbed Cargo Bicycle Trailer and put her up on the inbound leg. Be sure to view the video

Walked and Videoed Centre Field at Panama Flats Park

Centre Field at Panama Flats Park Wednesday I walked through the centre trail at Panama Flats after flying the hexacopter

Today I videoed the trail that cuts through the centre of Panama Flats Park . That's why the music is Centerfield by John Fogerty

Firstly, the drone video was taken from low altitudes across the field from east to west then from my cellphone as the 250m trail was walked. Vimeo Panama Flats Park VIDEO

Typhoon H on Burley Flatbed Cargo Trailer to 38km Marker

Sooke Basin Drone VIDEO 2-minutes

Thursday I cycled 16km roundtrip along the Galloping Goose Trail.

Starting at Rocky Point Road I trailed the hexacopter on my Burley Flatbed up to the 38km Marker. This puts one at the marvelous outlook over Sooke Basin.

The trail is elevated approximately 30m (100ft.) above the ocean at this location.

We took the copter up another 45m (150ft.) so at an elevation of some 75m (250ft.) we got a much better view of the surrounding terrain.

It was another day in paradise. For the first six kilometres outbound I did not see anyone else on the trail.

Cycle Yuneec H Brookleigh Road to Retriever Ponds

Elk/Beaver Lake Park Thursday morning I drove to Brookleigh Road at the north end of Elk Lake with my bike and trailer.

From Fisherman's Wharf I cycled with Burley Flatbed Cargo Trailer in tow sputhbound to the Retriever Ponds beside Beaver Lake.

There I recorded some video with my Yuneec CGO3 cameras. Yes, I have two.

The whole exercise was a tes of my new equipment and how best to operate it.

I was amazed how busy this trail is with mostly walkers -- and their three dogs -- on a weekday morning. While cycling this 3km section -- inbound and outbound -- I'm sure there were some 40 others on the trail in a short window of 1½ hours.

Cycled with Cameron to Kapoor Station

Sooke Campground to Kapoor Station with Burley Trailer Monday we cycled along the Galloping Goose Trail from Sooke Potholes up to Kapoor Station at the 55½km location.

I pulled my Yuneec Typhoon 500+ quadcopter on my new Burley Flatbed Trailer behind my Norco XFR bike.

Yes, we have pictures-to-prove-it -- and video

Drone Aerial of Kapoor Regional Park

These aerial images show the southern. treed area of Kapoor Regional Park at the northern end of the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT). Kapoor Regional Park encompasses all the land -- between the trail and the Sooke River -- from this southern section all the way up to its northern end at the Victoria Water District Treatment Area (watershed) fence. The watershed (red) gate is located at the 57km location of the GGT.

The former site of the Kapoor Lumber Company Ltd. sawmill is inaccessible to the public because it is located in what is now the Victoria District Water Treatment Area (watershed) under the direction of the Capital Regional District (CRD).

The directors of the Kapoor Lumber Company Ltd. were (c.1929) Mayo Singh. Kapoor Singh, Managing Director, Ganda Singh, Secretary and Paymaster, Ganea Singh is Mill Superintendent and Doman Singh is Wood Superintendent.
