B'Day Bike Ride to Sidney-by-the-Sea

Since 2008 our son has taken me on a Birthday Bike Ride
Usually, it's a ride one would not normally take on a daily, weekly or even a monthly basis.
Perhaps the type of ride one would only take once a year.
This year, in recognition of my octogenerian, quinticential birthday, he chose a fish&chips' lunch at Pier Bistro in Sidney-by-the-Sea some 27km from home. That's 54km roundtrip bike ride.
April 2022 is one of the coldest on record but we managed to keep warm — in spite of the accompanying strong winds.

Cycle 18.4km Roundtrip Ride

This morning I took a quick ride over to our accountant's office on Gorge Rd.E
“Quick” because I allowed 30 minutes for ride that took 32 minutes and left 8 minutes late. Do the math.
The ride was as cold as anticipated at 5°C.
Upon my return at 1p.m. I reported the broken door locks to Ding in the office.

Tsawout Tribe Highway-17 Blockade

A local tribe blocked Hwy-17 for over an hour on the busiest BC Ferries', travel-day of the year.

The Pat Bay Highway was blocked by North Saanich Municipality at every access point at least one kilometre away from the carry-on at the Waddling Dog Hotel.

Presumably, the preemptive barriers were to keep frustrated drivers from running over the protestors.

This blockade is not to be confused with previous highway blockades.

October 22, 2020 Indigenous group plans one-hour blockade of Pat Bay Highway today to support lobster fishermen October 22, 2020

February 26 2020 About 80 people from four major Peninsula First Nations blocking major highway February 26 2020

Dec 27, 2012 First Nations protest idles Hwy 17, Dec 27, 2012 The whole carry-on was good opportunity to get in a 40km, roundtrip, bike ride for me. Were it not for being on a bike, one could not even have gotten close to this debacle.

Cycled 56km McTavish Interchange and Flight Path

Biking McTavish Interchange VIDEO . . . an interesting 10 minutes duration

Thursday I cycled 56km roundtrip from home out to Victoria Intl. Airport (CYYJ) and around the Flight Path Pathway (FPP).

The FPP is a nine-kilometre, paved pathway around the entire CYYJ property.

We have walked -- and also cycled -- this pathway in the past but never from home on a bicycle.

This adventure is now only possible after buying an electric-assist bicycle.

The route is basically: use the Lochside Trail between home (Victoria, BC) and McTavish Interchange Overpass then cycle the FPP loop around the airport. Great day. Lots of fun.

Let's Go Biking to Market

Sunday morning I cycle a circuitous route over to Thrifty Quadra to buy some grub.

Larchwood/ Blenkinsop Greenway to Lochside Trail added some distance to make the roundtrip ride 15km.

It was a fun ride and the bike performed as advertised.

Wharf St. Dedicated Bike Lanes and Waterfront Loop 30km

Wharf St. Dedicated Bike Lanes at Johnson St.
Wharf Street Dedicated Bike Lanes VIDEO

Thursday morning I cytcled a 30km loop around Victoria's waterfront. My route went from home to the Lochside Trail at Borden St. to the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT) at the Switch Bridge.
After following the GGT for another 4km, we crossed the Johnson Street Bridge to Pandora Ave. at Wharf St.

The Wharf Street bike lane, pedestrian scramble at Humboldt is set to open Thursday. A large portion of the Wharf Street bike lane will open Thursday with the rest opening in two weeks (second week in August 2019)

The Wharf Street lanes will run from Pandora Avenue and eventually link up to Humboldt and continue all the way to some streets which will eventually get users to Dallas Road. The final route decisions have not been finalized yet. Probably, Vancouver St. to Park Boulevard.

The dedicated cycling lane from the Johnson Street Bridge to Fort Street is open for use today, while the section along Wharf Street to Government Street is set to open Aug. 8, and the section from Government to Douglas Street on Aug. 15. Be there!

Once past Victoria's Inner Harbour, we tracked the waterfront route which follows the roads of Victoria to the Uplands.

We then rode down Cadboro Bay hill and up Killarney to the Hobbs Road connector into the University of Victoria grounds at House #4.

From there, it was the Alumni Trails past Finnerty Gardens and back home along Palo Alto Ave.

A great ride on a great day!

Cycled with Cameron to Sidney (52km roundtrip)

Good enough to eat Cameron and I cycled 52km roundtrip to Sidney-by-the-Sea Pier Bistro, had lunch -- left. Awesome!

Cameron rode his Norco acoustic and me my pedelec

All went well and we had a fantastic ride and great lunch of fish&chips, beer and coffee at Pier Bistro.

Momma and I have had takeout from The Pier so knew it's the best on Vancouver Island

Cameron is so strong on his bike I could hardly keep up with him on my electric -- but I did.

Cycled 17km WalMart

Friday morning I cycled 17km roundtrip from home to Wally World and back.

My route was Larchwood/Feltham/Bow Park/Malton/Mt.Doug X Rd/Blenkinsop Greenway to Lochside Trail.

Walmart is located at the 4km Marker along the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT) in Uptown Mall. This marker also designated the 4km along the Lochside Trail from the Johnson Street Bridge downtown Victoria BC.

This is where the GGT and Lochside Trail converge and is called The Switch Bridge area of the routes.

The Switch Bridge is where one 'switches' trails.

Del Sol to Century Road

Monday I rode the Del Sol 15km roundtrip to Century Rd. and back home.

C checked out his spreader-bar on the new ride. He took it for a spin --two spins actually -- and he likes it.

I took the circuitous route to San Juan Greenway, over Mt. Douglas Ridge, Blenkinsop Greenway and Cumberland Road (and Court) to Century. Returned via Bow Park from Malton Ave.

Cycled Del Sol to BC Ferries

Wednesday morning I rode 65km roundtrip from home to BC Ferries ticket booth at Swartz Bay and back.

The ride started at 8a.m. and ended back home at 12:00p.m.

Everything went well and I'm happy with the $3300 price. The price is the same as elsewhere.

I don't have to worry about the battery power as it lasts longer than me -- 65km of four hours is my limit.

The bike is fully insured with one-hundred dollars' deductible.

The outhouse is under construction beside the Lochside Trail at the Blenkinsop Greenway connector.

Cycled 17km Roundtrip Admirals Interchange

Sunday morning I cycled 17km roundtrip from home to Admirals Interchange and back.

A balmy 10°C was perfect for the outing

My route was McKenzie to Lochside to Switchbridge then Galloping Goose Trail northwest bound.

Amos cycled the same distance (20.4km) from his home to Belmont Church and back at the same time.

I hope we can cycle together sometime

Cycled 15km Blenkinsop Trestle Roundtrip

Click on map to zoom and pan . . .

Friday morning I cycled 15km roundtrip from home to Blenkinsop Trestle and return through Feltham Park Trail.

New return route took me from Mann Trucking to Cumberland Rd/Cumberland Court onto Century Rd. connector. From Century I cycled east to the Bow Park Overpass and took the ground-level trail northeast through Bow Park and the Feltham Trail to Cedar Hill Road.

Once across Shelbourne we cycled eastbound to Larchwood and the usual route home to Cedar Hill Cross Road.

It was a cool morning but perfect for cycling.

I took a few pix and got a Viewranger GPS track.

Cycled Norco 13km Roundtrip to Ken&Eileens off Quadra

The Mann Hilton (under construction) This morning I cycled 13km roundtrip from home to Ken&Eileen's place. Their townhouse is located between The Keg on Quadra and the Lochside Trail beside Swan Creek (as in Swan Lake Bridge). There is no access to the Lochside Trail from their complex.

I cycled for 1½hrs under sunny skies at a balmy 5°C outbound warming to 8°C (45°F.) inbound.

The highlight for me was seeing the new connector path under construction at the deadend of Ansell Road at McKenzie Road. When cycling, I always use this north-south connector as an alternative to busy Shelbourne Street. There is a controlled, traffic-light crossing of McKenzie at this location and Larchwood Drive.

Climbing the Mt. Douglas Cross Road hill (inbound) is a real grind for me but it does reinforce my plans to buy an e-bike in the new year.

The new building being constructed on Mann Trucking property near Blenkinsop Greenway at Lochside Trail is proceeding exactly as it should.

Great morning for cycling at a balmy 8°C and stiff north wind. My new cycling gloves kept my hands warm.

Cycled Norco 11km to Speedy Auto

Cycled Norco 11km from home to Speedy Auto to pick up Honda

Put bike in trunk and drove home

Four new tires were put on Thursday and muffler, front brakes and left-front drive shaft were replaced Friday

Pick up was at 4 p.m. at Speedy

A somewhat circuitous route but safer than on busy roads in the middle of the Friday afternoon commute.  Direct, road route is less than 5km.

Earlier in the afternoon I walked the hood looking for a Ubike but none were to be found.

Cycled 16km Roundtrip on Lochside

No Bull Sunday morning I cycled 16km roundtrip from home over Blenkinsop Lake to Faithwood Farm off the Lochside Trail and back home.

The paved driveway is on the western side of the trail 740m north from the Blenkinsop Lake Bridge.

My hexacopter drone (6-propellers) was being pulled behind on my Burley Flatbed Cargo trailer.

The plan was to put the drone up and checkout the large field located here from the air but it seemed a bit too windy.

It was good ride and good cardio-exercise pulling the trailer up those hills.

Access road along the Lochside Trail: 48°29'20.00"N 123°21'37.21"W Check it out in Google.earth

Cycled Newly Opened Fort Street Bike Lanes

Fort Street Dedicated Bike Lanes
