Shelbourne Street Bike Lanes

Shelbourne Northbound Bike Lane Saturday morning I cycled the new Shelbourne Street bike Lanes.
I cycled the the southbound lane five month's ago as it was the first lane completed.
Now, it was time to ride the northbound lanes as they too are now completed.
Yes, we have photos and videos-to-prove-it.

DJI Neo First Flight

Flight of the Condor DJI Neo First Flight These two images are screenshots from my Youtube video. The images could have been taken from the camera recording but for me the ultimate test is what it looks like on YouTube. For my money, the DJI Neo video camera at 4k/30 does an excellent job of recording one's surroundings. “This is where I went and this is what I saw.”

Engineers' Luncheon

We Are The Engineers Time for another blog update.
It's Thursday, February 22 and I went for lunch yesterday with some former workmates and was able to injest half of a baron-of-beef sanny with dip. She got to eat the other half after I brought it home.
The day before I walked my two kilometre (2km) loop walk-to-market which included up Stamboul hill and thru Horner Park.
So. I'm coming back!

iZip 22km Roundtrip Panama Flats and Hyacinth Park

Hyacinth Park Trail Swan Creek Bridge I Cycled iZip 22km roundtrip to Panama Flats Park and home.
This is my old hood from the 60s
We lived on Daisy Ave. and now there is a labyrinth of trails around that location.
I followed the one behind our old property up to McKenzie Ave. at Carey Rd.
After cycling back the same route to the high ground within Panama Flats Park, I then headed for home in Gordon Head.
Instead of backtracking along the Inland Interurban Trail to Tillicum Mall we headed up Marigold Rd. to Burnside Rd.W to get back on the Galloping Goose Trail at the McKenzie overpass.

Cycled 44km Roundtrip Cordova Spit and back

Cordova Spit Cyclist Before heading out on my 44km roundtrip bike ride I went to the market.
Once back home with the delivery it was off on the Lochside Trail to Cordova Spit on the Saanich Peninsula in Central Saanich.
I've walked to this park from Island View Beach and flown my drone over it and now I've cycled it twice.
The sand was particularly soft today and caused me to fall off my bike twice. I'm sure rough on bikes and old bodies.

Cycled 15km on Del Sol to Blenkinsop Lake and back

Saturday morning I cycled a 15km loop to Blenkinsop Lake and back.
I stopped at St. Luke's cemetery outbound to assist in the volunteer's cleanup.
Inbound there was a fair setup in Lambrick Park by the Recreation Centre
One sign read: Saanich Family Affair but that's all the info available for now.
It was a most pleasant morning with some strong winds.
Overlord Industries has not yet dealt with the battery issues on the iZip bicycle.

Cycled an 11km loop out to Arbutus Cove and back

Arbutus Cove Beachcomer Saturday morning I cycled an 11km loop out to Arbutus Cove and back
After taking the Larchwood to San Juan Greenway connector to the beach, it was Gordon Head Rd. inbound.
Gordon Head Rd. has Jade Pl connector to get one to Ansell Rd. and home via Palo Alto St..
7:30am to 8:45am is a great time to be out cycling on a sunny, Saturday morning.

Cycled 27km Loop to Town and Back

I Just Stopped By . . . 10:00am I rode my bike on a 27km loop to downtown and back.
After riding 11.7km to 990 Fort St. I headed back through town on the same route.
It was too cold to enjoy a seaside ride so on the inbound I stopped off at Tripp Station Bike Park to reflect upon the excitement of opening day here.
Too bad Mayor Fred Haynes lost his position in the last election. He was a good mayor and a fine fella to be around.
After leaving Tripp Station it was the Blenkinsop Greenway to Mt. Douglas Park then San Juan Greenway to Lambrick Park and Larchwood Connector to home.
Serendipitously, San Juan Greenway Xing at Shelbourne St. made the headlines of the Times-Colonist in this morning's paper.

Cycled 11km Tripp Station Bike Park and back

Tripp Station Bike Park selfie with Saanich Mayor, Fred Haynes Saturday morning I cycled over to the grand opening of the all-new: Tripp Station Bike Park
Very impressive undertaking on such a small plot of land.
There were over a hundred bikes in attendance with the ogligatory riders.
My GoPro let me down again by not recording the ribbon cutting but it did record enough to capture the ambience and excitement.
Why, I even got a selfie with Saanich Mayor. Fred Haynes. Lucky me. Lucky him.

Walked Parker Beach and Put Drone Up

Mansion on the Cliff Some often wonder when out walking — what's over the next hill?
I wonder what's on top the steep cliffs while walking along Vancouver Island beaches.
That's what drones are for.
Most 15 to 50 million dollar homes along Victoria's waterfront have no public access.
Therefore, one needs a drone Sayward Beach Homes Drone DJI Mini 2

Walked 4km Island View Beach roundtrip to Beachcomber RV

Island View walk to Beachcomber

Saturday morning I had a 2km walk along Island View Beach southward to the Beachcomber RV Park and campground situated on the point.

There is no access from Campion Rd except the private campground road and it is gated.
Thus, it's a 2km walk along the beach from Island View Beach parking lot.
What a marvelous walk! With steep banks on the shore side and beautiful ocean views of Haro Straight and James Island it's a Vancouver Island gem.
We spent a summer vacation in the early 60s when the kids were small and we owned a 16ft. boat.
The vacation cabins are long gone so we will leave that story for another day.

Cycled 47km to Cordova Spit Park

Biking Cordova Spit Park Cordova Spit Park biking
Saturday morning I cycled a 47km loop from home out the Lochside Trail to Cordova Spit Park.
Cordova Spit Park is in the municipality of Central Saanich, one of the thirteen which form the Capital Regional District of British Columbia. Located on the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island, visit this park to enjoy a wonderful seascape along the shores of Cordova Channel and Saanichton Bay.
I've walked to this park from Island View Beach and flown my drone over it and now I've cycled it.

Colquitz/Amity Xing 61km Loop Ride

Amity Road Overpass Thursday I cycled 61km roundtrip out bound along the Interurban Rail Trail and inbound along the Lochide Trail.
From home, along the Galloping Goose Trail, I first explored the high ground in Cuthbert Holmes Park before getting lost in the labyrinth of its trails. Some locals directed me to the exit.
After cycling into Colquitz River park from Cuthbert, I followed it through Panama Flats to Copley West Park.
After exiting onto Munn Road from Copley East, I rode Munn west up to and through The Vancouver Island Industrial Complex to Glendale Gardens.
Once across Interurban, it was a short distance to Red Barn Market where the Wallace Drive 10km on-road section starts.
Wallace Dr. joins up with Amity Road where there's a highway overpass for cyclists and pedestrians.
From there it was approximately a 24km ride along the Lochside Trail and neighbourhood roads to our place.
It was a four-hour outing but I survived — barely.

Walked Island View to Cordova Spit Park

Sunrise over James Island Friday morning, after setting out from home at 5:30a.m., I hit the trail at six o'clock to walk the 2700m connector between two parks on the Saanich Peninsula. The walk oneway took 50 minutes (with photography stops).
Cordova Spit Park is located on the Saanich Peninsula and extends northward from Island View Beach pushing into Haro Strait and the waters of Saanichton Bay.
The northern half of the spit is municipal parkland owned by the municipality of Central Saanich. The lower half and road access to the spit belongs to the Tsawout First Nations.
I'm glad my first trip was not on the bike as about one kilometre of the pathway is soft sand. Not recommended for cycling.
It was fortunate after missing the turn along the spit trail I wound up along the western-side beach. The two shipwrecks stranded there are worth taking a look.
Inbound, I took the maintrail (old road?) through the centre of the spit's grasslands.

Cycled UVic, Haro, Cadboro Bay and back

Cadboro Bay Gyro Park Thursday morning I cycled a 10km loop down to Cadboro Bay Gyro Park and back home.

It was good to get out after not cycling for over three weeks — Wednesday, March 18 to be exact. But who's counting.

I know my way around the hood so although the ride wasn't long it was certainly interesting.

Cycling all the byways, nooks and crannies beats pulling our one's passport and wallet to find something better than what's right here.

Another great day biking in one of the world's most beautiful cities.

Cycled 71km North Saanich

Wednesday I cycled 71km out to Towner Park Road and through the trails to Wain Rd. and back along the Lochside Trail.

This the farthest I've ridden on one ride. It was almost too much after four hours but I made it. If I had Ibuprofen with me my legs would have lasted longer. The Shimano battery had 5km (high) left on it at the end of the ride. The power was set to high most of the time inbound. Set to Normal outbound.

Mission was accomplished after cycling the connector between Towner Park Road and Towner Road in North Saanich. See the video below.

Lochside Trail rest area at Mt. Newton Cross Rd, Saanichton, BC. This is where the 'trail' – which is on roads for some 30% of its 32km length – becomes a roadside path for the remainder ot its length northbound through Sidney BC.

Harry and Meghan Weren't Home

End of the Trail Sunday we walked Towner Park Rd down the sea at Patricia Bay on the Saanich Peninsula.

Towner Park Rd is where the entrance to Mille Fleurs Estate where Harry and Meghan have been residing of late.

We did not go the righthand (north) direction but took the footpath southward

The tide was out so we had some spectacular views from the water's edge

The place Harry & Meghan are staying at is not too shabby as can be see in this VIDEO

Cycled 25km Home roundtrip Panama Flats

Wednesday I cycled 25km roundtrip from home to Panama Flats and return.

I was dressed warmly in my winter jacket and had on the new highway straps purchased from Princess Auto

There was deep water running across the trail from Colquitz Creek in one location.

My feet got wet while pedaling and so did the Shimano motor. No injury to either.

The return route included Mt. Doug X Road and San Juan Greenway

A pleasant day with balmy temps to 8°C -- no wind and no rain
